The Digital Health Revolution: Stay on Top in Times of Disruption

The summer teaches us there are very specific times when different fruits and vegetables are ripe for the picking. Health is a field that is ripe for disruption today, and digital health is about to change everything.

Diagnosis, treatment and health management are all on the cusp of radical reinvention. Today, when you can 3-D print artificial limbs in war-torn Sudan, hold an iPhone-sized scanner up to a person’s chest and see a vivid, moving, 3-D image of what’s inside, or interpret a medical image up to 10,000 times faster than the average radiologist, you get a sense of how quickly whole industries can be swept away and replaced by new players. This has implications for everyone involved in healthcare.

The Medical Futurist just released a new book detailing the “Top 100 Companies Shaping the Future of Digital Health”. What’s revealing is that, of those 100 companies, only three are large well known firms today: IBM, Honda and Medtronic. And, most tellingly, only Medtronic is currently a large scale medical technology firm. That means the firms that currently dominate healthcare need to either buy quickly, scramble to play catch-up, or realize they are about to start to fade into oblivion.

Whichever route the established firms follow, this change in how healthcare is delivered means a revolution for buyers, suppliers, providers and insurers. That, in turn, means a tremendous change for healthcare practitioners and patients.

Eager for change

To better understand how patients might react to new digital health offers, we conducted a study testing reactions to a range of digital health concepts, including IBM Watson and the Good Doctor—an app that provides free diagnosis, treatment and online appointment booking and health information. It also lets users consult doctors through text, pictures, and video. Currently it is sweeping China and is predicted to have half a billion users in the next two years.

We discovered that Americans are eager for the digital revolution, and are keen to try all sorts of new digital health offers. So not only is technology about to deliver a knockout blow to the established order, consumers are ripe for the picking. Keen to make their voices heard

Whenever there is radical change, the organizations who win are those who understand what people want and how to communicate benefits effectively. Insight communities provide an ideal forum for being able to test new ideas, monitor trends, fine-tune communications, and understand what drives choice.

The good news is, both patients and physicians want to have their voices heard. In other research, we asked both patients and physicians if they would be willing to participate in an ongoing insight community sponsored by a hospital or payor that focuses on innovation in health. We found that almost 9 in 10 physicians and patients were interested in joining a research community focused on finding better ways to improve health through innovation.
